There are several things a person can do to change their diet when it’s time for them to lose some weight. Lots of sugar, processed foods, and carbohydrates are the main contributors to expanding waistlines. Reaching a healthy weight has a lot to do with portion control and the types of food that a person is eating.
Many diet fads come and go, but not the popularity of salads. The basis of many salads is, of course, lettuce, a food with little to no calories. However, lettuce doesn’t have much of a taste, nor is it particularly nutritious on its own, so that’s where the other ingredients make all the difference.
For those people who are on the go, try ordering a premade salad for take out. One of the more popular salad variations is the Caesar salad (with or without chicken). In addition to the salad dressing, this salad comes with croutons, parmesan cheese, and perhaps even anchovies. It’s better to choose grilled over breaded chicken, if that’s included. This makes a great lunch, especially after a light breakfast of, say, yogurt and fruit.
Asian salads are also popular salad choices. The salad recipe ingredients vary, but can include mesclun greens, peppers, tomatoes, corn, and mandarin orange slices. The dressing can be made of rice wine vinegar, salt, pepper, sesame seeds, tahini, and cloves.
Greek salads, like Caesar salads, can be made with or without chicken (which is usually grilled and seasoned with lemon). Olive oil, vinegar, and oregano are the primary ingredients of Greek dressing, but eggs are sometimes included to make the dressing creamier. Part of what makes Greek salad so popular is its signature ingredient, feta cheese, with olives, tomatoes, and cucumbers being secondary. Although delicious, feta cheese is rich in calories. So, for those trying to lose weight, choose dressing without eggs in it in favor of more feta, or choose small portions of both.
Those are just some of the many salad options available. In addition to implementing salads into a diet, it’s important to start exercising, even if it is just a half hour walk each day. It helps circulation, and also helps to burn calories. Health and weight can definitely be improved by making just a few lifestyle changes.
