Mother’s Day is just around the corner, so it’s time to dip into that savings you put aside in January to buy the woman who gave you life an incredible generous and thoughtful gift. What’s that? You haven’t been throwing your loose change in a jar? Ah I understand, rent is coming up and bills are due and the funds are currently a little low. In the old days, class projects made out of paper plates and dry macaroni with the words ‘ World’s Best Mom’ made her weep with joy. Now that we’re all adults..that not only will not fly, it’ll probably get you a one way ticket to Crazy Island. Here are some great ideas for some nice things to do for that wonderful woman who put up with you all those years.
Food: make her dinner. Dinner doesn’t have to be expensive, it can cost less than $10. As long as she likes spaghetti w/ marina sauce, garlic bread and a simple green salad. Visit the www.ChefPointCafe.org for fantastic recipes on a budget. If she’s more of a sweet tooth, try your hands at baking. And before you come at me with this ‘ but I can’t cook’ business, I’m not buying it; cooking and baking are easy—all you gotta do is follow directions. This is grade school stuff, people! So pre-heat that oven and get some sugar cookies going for your mama! The simpler the cookie, the more likely you’ll already have most, if not all, the ingredients on hand without having to buy any. Sugar, chocolate chip and peanut butter cookies, I find, you cannot go wrong with. Get crazy and provide her with a variety!
Ok, if you simply can’t see yourself in the kitchen, why not take Mom to Chef Point Cafe for lunch or dinner. Chef has created a mouth watering menu of specials for Mother’s Day. Some of my favorites are Stuffed Flounder or Salmon Croquette. Then of course top it off with the world famous bread pudding. Make sure you call ahead so you don’t have to spend so much time waiting in line. Mom will appreciate it.
If you have absolutely not a one dollar to spend on dear old Mom, that’s okay; times are tough. But there’s still things you can do to make her feel special. Moms aren’t picky, all they really want is to hear from you. Pick up the phone, drop by for a visit, interact with her in a personal way (i.e. do not Facebook her.) Tell her that you love her and list all the things she does that makes you the luckiest son/daughter you know. It seems so simple, but it really is the easiest way to put a smile on her face. But if you want to come baring gifts; give her the gift of a break. Tackle a chore that she absolutely cannot stand to do; dishes, yard work, laundry, etc. She will appreciate being able to kick up her feet and relax while you do some hard-working labor. (Dishes totally count as hard-working labor…)
Hopefully this has inspired you to get up and find something to do for mom without robbing the bank. Just remember, when it comes to Mom, it’s the gesture that counts and not the price tag.
